Uncle
Sam Catches the Ripe Fruit
The issue that this political cartoon is about is the
Annexation of Hawaii. In the cartoon, the apple (Hawaii) is falling into Uncle
Sam’s hat. The cartoonist’s message is that obtaining Hawaii was easy for Uncle
Sam. In the political cartoon, Uncle Sam looks very happy about what has
happened. Others might see this cartoon and think that Uncle Sam wanted to have
more fruit off the tree. The techniques that the cartoonist used to make it
persuasive are labeling, and symbolism. The cartoon shows labeling because each
apple on the tree has the name of a country or territory, and it shows
symbolism because the fruit is just falling out of the tree. The cartoon
supports my position on American Imperialism because Uncle Sam isn’t doing
anything to get the fruit. It just comes to him.
