The Open Door
The issue that this political cartoon is about is the Open
Door Policy. The cartoonist’s message is that while other countries could trade
with China, Uncle Sam held the keys to doing so. In the political cartoon,
Uncle Sam stands at the doorway to China. He is surrounded by people dressed to
represent their countries. Germany, France, England, Russia, Japan, Turkey, and
Italy are shown. Others might see this cartoon and think that Uncle Sam was
being a good guy by opening the door, but in reality, they have to deal with
him. The techniques that the cartoonist used to make it persuasive are symbolism,
and exaggeration. The cartoon shows symbolism because each of the countries are
wearing clothes that are representative of their native style, and it shows
exaggeration because Uncle Sam is towering over everyone else. The cartoon
supports my position on American Imperialism because Uncle Sam is making these
countries go through him to trade with China.
