The Spanish-American War

Ten Thousand Miles from Tip to Tip

The issue that this political cartoon is about is the Spanish-American War. The cartoonist’s message is that in 100 years the United States had grown from a small country to one that spread out 10,000 miles. Others might see this cartoon and think that such a spread out country would be a good thing. The techniques that the cartoonist used to make it persuasive are labeling, and symbolism. The cartoon shows labeling because each territory is labeled, and it shows symbolism because the 1898 eagle appears to be tired watching over a country that was so spread out. The cartoon supports my position on American Imperialism because how can you keep track of things in a country that is so spread out.
